For over 100 years, Morita Shikki have been designing and producing beautiful lacquerware. The Yamanaka area specialises in fine wood turning which is then lacquered with a clear lacquer to show off the grain of the wood and the skill of the wood turner.
The Morita family worked with designer Yuichi Nara to develop some new ideas. Someone had the idea of taking a traditional rice bowl, turning it upside down and making it into a lampshade! But the next stage was to find a wood turner with the skill and confidence to turn the shades to such a fine tolerance, which elevated the shades to another level.
