Meet the Maker

The Morita family worked with designer Yuichi Nara to develop some new ideas. Someone had the idea of taking a traditional rice bowl, turning it upside down and making it into a lampshade! But the next stage was to find a wood turner with the skill and confidence to turn the shades to such a fine tolerance, which elevated the shades to another level.

This is a great example of how all the different parts of an industry collaborate rather than compete in Japan's traditional centres of excellence - retailer, designer, craftsman all work together to refine new ideas and the result is a totally unique but subtle and elegant hand-turned wooden shade.
