The coaster is intentionally left rough and pitted and the beautiful grain of the wood is emphasised by the technique of yakisuga-ita - or gently charring the wood, sometime known as Shou Sugi Ban. This is then coated in a traditional beeswax lacquer to add another layer of lustre.
