Shinsuke Iwami studied oil painting at university but became a salaryman after graduation. Soon disillusioned with the life of a salaryman, he quit to make pottery despite having no previous experience.
He prefers natural glazes which are unpredictable and inconsistent, so each time he empties the kiln he can enounter unexpected colours and effects. His work is often textured and mysterious, with an organic and elemental feel.
A cheerful, chatty and inquisitive man, he also frequently travels to the Danish island of Bornholm to make and be inspired by the community of artists there.
