Shinpei Fukushima is the third generation of his family to be a potter in Mashiko. He studied sculpture in Kanazawa College of Art, and his drawing and sculpting skills are often incorporated into his work.
Shinogi is the technique of carving ridged patterns into the clay, and these pieces show Fukushima san’s skill in shaping and sculpting. The name of the technique is derived from traditional swordsmithing where the shinogi is the ridge down the side of a katana blade.
