These are a pair of Bekuhai sake cups from the North of Japan: the round bottoms mean that the sake will spill out if you put them down without finishing! The slight metallic lustre to the glaze contrasts with the rough exterior, but what sets the apart is what looks like a seam or join around the choko.
Yukiya Izumita is based up in Iwate prefecture and is making a name for himself as a modern ceramicist. His works are now in collections in the US and in Japan (including Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Iwate Museum of Art and Minneapolis Institute of Art)
