Yanase san gave this glaze the name Donten, which means "cloud" in Japanese. The variation in the glaze and the slight irregularities in the form are really pleasing and the glaze itself has a slightly soapy or waxy feel making these plates lovely to use and hold as well.
These are great for pasta and also salads, desserts - anything you can think of! The white glaze is plain enough to show off the food, but also interesting enough to stand by itself.- 23cm Diameter, 5cm High
- Stoneware, dishwasher safe (see our Care Guide)
- Hand thrown by Yanase san at the Yanase Kiln in Echizen on the North side of Japan.
Meet the Maker:
Yanase Tobo
We only found Yanase san because of a single rice bowl we saw in an Echizen "michi-no-eki". We used a spare afternoon to track him down and we have worked together ever since.
His Donten glaze is particularly popular and we have expanded the range to include ramen bowls and sushi plates. Still working from his parents' house, he has managed to complete projects for restaurants and designers across the world.
