Sansho - the Three Pines
Inspired by a Zen Buddhist expression, Sansho means “the three pines” (三松), which represent the past, present and future. Japanese artisans have always had to adapt to changing times while being true to their tradition. The three pines represent this delicate balance between continuity and adaptability. Yanagi expressed it as “a tribute to the past, an endorsement of the present and preparation for the future”.
We are trying to offer an expanded future to all the people we work with - we need to attract people back to the coutryside, to support the remaining makers and to celebrate their philosophy.
