Iwate prefecture is not famous for its ceramics, but tucked
away on the windswept coast in the North of the prefecture is Izumita san's
kiln. His work is now in the limelight and various galleries across the world
are competing for his pieces.
Izumita san has always been fascinated by geological time
and the visible layering of the earth's age in stratas. Mixing his own clay he
tries to emulate this marbling of colours and textures. He even painstakingly
inserts or creates strips of clay one by one to physically recreate his mental
image of the layers of the earth.
Very down to earth and affable, Izumita san is an artist who
has big ideas and an uncompromising, fertile imagination but who also has kept
the simplicity and humility of the years he spent as a potter before gaining
recognition.
