Open Sekisou Vase

£44200

It is hard to overestimate how hard it is to construct a flat open vase like this (although it is described as a vase it is closer to a sculpture than a practical vase!). Each thin strip of clay is hand-formed and inserted into the top of the vase in double concentric circles. The result is a piece which looks like a freshly excavated fossil in Izumita's signature marbled clay.

Includes a signed paulownia box as provenance.

  • 18cm Diameter, 5cm High
  • Stoneware (see our Care Guide)
  • Not suitable for dishwashing
  • Handmade by Izumita san at his kiln in the North Eastern prefecture of Iwate

Meet the Maker:

Izumita Yukiya

Based in the North of Japan in Iwate prefecture, far away from the traditional centres of ceramics in Japan, Izumita Yukiya creates sculptural pieces inspired by geology.

His making often features strips and layers of clay, influenced by geological strata, which could be interpreted as the eternal layering and relayering of the earth. His pieces are now in major galleries in the US and Japan as his reputation continues to rise.
