The tea bowl or chawan occupies an exalted place in Japanese culture. Many artists see the tea bowl as their most artistic work because of the importance of the tea ceremony in the birth of what we now consider to be the quintessential Japanese aesthetic. From Sen no Rikyu onwards, more than any other item, the tea bowl has come to represent the artstic representation of Japan.
In the early days of the tea ceremony, the tea caddy or chaire was considered the most important piece, but now the artistry of the Raku family and many others has been elevated to the prime position.
Tea bowls can cost in the thousands of pounds but we try and offer a full range so that everyone can hold and experience their own piece of Japan. If you would like to explore the possibility of a boxed and signed Makuzu yaki or Takatori yaki tea bowl, please just contact us.
