Care Guide

These are not suitable for putting in the dishwasher, microwave or oven, and please do not use metal cutlery as it will damage the lacquer.

Wooden and lacquered items can seem difficult to care for but with a few simple rules, they can actually last for a long time. Please hand wash with care: do not immerse for any length of time or use an abrasive cleaning pad, and dry with a soft cloth as soon as you can after washing, then give a final wipe with a dry cloth to prevent any dulling.

Do not place in direct sunlight, this can cause discolouration or deformation. Although in Japanese aesthetics worn or discoloured lacquer shows the length of time you have used something and some people view this wear as very attractive.

Meet the Maker:

Kihachi Kobo

Suya san at the Kihachi workshop has a network of craftsmen and women creating items for him in and around Yamanakaonsen, the heart of the lacquer industry in Ishikawa prefecture. He likes organic shapes and clear lacquers (both natural and synthetic) as can be seen from our selection.
