53cm Enban, Natural Hemp Japanese Paper Shade

A large elliptical 53cm Japanese handmade paper lamp shade (Chōchin) made with a beautiful lace-like hemp washi paper. This shade still casts a lot of light but the random natural fibres in the paper create a lovely shadow and cast a warm light. Hemp is quite rare as a paper and it will lose it's bright whiteness and soften a tiny bit as it ages.

Please note, if it isn't clear from the pictures, this paper has small holes in it by design.

  • These shades now attach directly to your pendant cord, you have a choice of a White or Black hanger grip. These will work with any diameter flex/cable as long as it is round, not flat, and will work in any country, including the USA, Canada, Australia and New Zealand
  • Our paper shades do not have a stretcher inside and will not always be perfectly symmetrical (the measurements above are approximate). Your shade will come with care instructions if you want to stretch it out and make it as round as possible.

What pendant cable or cordset do I need?

Our shades hang directly from your pendant cable, so you do not need any extra fittings or electrical skills.

We do sell pendant cordsets, but these are CE certified E27 standard for use in the UK / EU and several other countries (e.g. Singapore or Australia). They are not UL certified for use in North America (and our product page for cordsets will not display to North American either because we cannot sell them into North America).

However, our shades will work with any cordset or pendant cable so you can purchase a similar brass lampsocket with cable from Grand Brass, or go to the Color Cord Company, Brighttia or even Amazon for example. You are very welcome to email us a picture or a link if you would like re-assurance that our shade will work with your chosen pendant.

Guide to our papers

The Unryu paper is the whitest, the Kozo paper is off-white with flecks, and the Asaraku or Hemp paper is off-white with holes in it.

Meet the Maker:

Fushitani Shouten

Fushitani san’s father started the company in 1962 after completing a traditional ten-year apprenticeship. This family company keeps using traditional techniques and materials but also seeks to innovate. They have developed new styles of chōchin (Japanese paper lights) like the double-layered shades and sectioned shades.

For Fushitani san, tradition is innovation, accepting new challenges is a necessity for the future. His main motivation is introducing Japanese paper lampshades to overseas and connecting people in the world through his works. Half of his business
is firmly in traditional Japan: making lamps for temples and restaurants, but the other half is making modern paper lamp shades for both the domestic and overseas market.
