Matsumoto Kurogi Chawan

£3600

These are sold as chawan (teabowls) but they are just as well used as rice bowls or cereal bowls. The rough texture of the woodgrain pattern on the outside lets the gold of the manganese glaze pool and collect around the rim. These are not all symmetrical and are sometimes slightly off-kilter.

  • Approx 7cm high and roughly 12cm in diameter
  • Stoneware (see our Care Guide)
  • Not recommended to put in the dishwasher
  • If you would like to see pictures of available stock, please just ask
  • Hand-thrown, kerosene-fired, from Matsumoto Ryota's kiln near Kasama town, Ibaraki prefecture

Meet the Maker:

Matsumoto Ryota

Matsumoto Ryota's pieces are instantly recognisable. He creates distinctive black ceramics which from a distance look like shou sugi ban with its charred raised grain, but on closer inspection they are finely detailed stoneware. The manganese glaze adds highlights of gold, and the overall effect is organic and mysterious. He often makes holes in his pieces and damages them intentionally to add a feeling of decay and wabi-sabi.
