Mitsurou Chataku Coaster, Large

£3400

The coaster is intentionally left rough and pitted and the beautiful grain of the wood is emphasised by the technique of yakisuga-ita - or gently charring the wood, which was originally used as a way of protecting and preserving the cladding on houses. This is then coated in a traditional beeswax lacquer to add another layer of lustre. Perfect as a large vase stand or bottle coaster, or can be used on it's own as a plate or tray.

  • 16.5cm Diameter, 2.8cm High
  • Hand-turned from Sen wood (see our Care Guide)
  • From the Asada Workshop, Ishikawa, North side of Honshū

Meet the Maker:

Asada Workshop

Yamanakaonsen in Ishikawa is famous for the skill of its woodturners and they use natural lacquer to show off both their skill and the natural beauty of the wood grain.

The Asada family use urushi lacquer as well as mitsurou beeswax lacquer with several types of wood (all sustainably harvested) including sen, zelkova and oak
