Matsumoto Kurogi Square Plates

£1400

From a distance these look just like shou sugi ban (lacquered charred wood), but up close you realise these are ceramic coasters, each with a different unique wood grain pattern. Flat enough to use as a coaster (or as a sushi plate), they also have an incredibly tactile surface.

  • Approx 0.5cm high and roughly 10.5cm square
  • Stoneware (see our Care Guide)
  • Not recommended to put in the dishwasher
  • If you would like to see pictures of available stock, please just ask
  • Hand-thrown, kerosene-fired, from Matsumoto Ryota's kiln near Kasama town, Ibaraki prefecture

Meet the Maker:

Matsumoto Ryota

Matsumoto Ryota's pieces are instantly recognisable. He creates distinctive black ceramics which from a distance look like shou sugi ban with its charred raised grain, but on closer inspection they are finely detailed stoneware. The manganese glaze adds highlights of gold, and the overall effect is organic and mysterious. He often makes holes in his pieces and damages them intentionally to add a feeling of decay and wabi-sabi.
