Choku Wooden Lamp Shade

£9500

Designed by Yuichi Nara, the wood turning is so fine on these lamp shades that the grain is illuminated from the inside, casting a warm and intimate glow. Hand-turned from cherry birch in Japan. There is a lot of variation in the grain, with dark shading and brighter patches (please see examples in the gallery). If you are concerned or would like to chose the shade that appeals most to you, please ask!

Shade only, electrics sold separately. This shade will only work with this brass lampholder (our cordsets are only approved for use in the UK / EU and are not UL certified for use in the USA, but we have now found a source for the same lampholder but in an E26 version for the USA) and it will not work with other lampholders.

  • Hand-turned Cherry Birch (see our Care Guide), wood grain can be different colours and can have knot marks and streaks. If this is a concern, get in touch and we can send pictures.
  • Hand-turned from cherry birch in Ishikawa prefecture on the North side of Honshū, at the Morita Shikki workshop.
  • 10.0cm High, 14.0cm Wide, 14.0cm Long
  • Wood (Cherry Birch) (please see the Care Guide below)

Care Guide

These lampshades are very finely turned and should be handled as if they were fine glass.  Please gently hold by the thicker boss on the top rather than the thin edge of the shade to prevent any damage when inserting the lampholder or bulb.

This shade is rated for a 5.5W E27 LED golf ball bulb.

Due to the depth of the boss, it can be hard to find a lampholder that will fit, please see our lighting accessories page to see what we suggest.

Conforms to BS EN 60598-1:2015 (Low Voltage Directive)

Meet the Maker:

Morita Shikki

Another small lacquer making family business from Ishikawa, the Morita family are always looking for new ideas. Their lampshades were simply larger rice bowls turned upside down! Unfortunately, the craftsman responsible for such fine turning has since died and we will no longer get fresh stock of the lampshades - the peril of working with an ageing population is that skills are at a real risk of dyeing out.
