Rounded Sculpted Oak Ash Glaze Guinomi

Unlike many of Hiraoka san's other gunomi, these ones use a lighter clay which shows off the pale oak ash glaze to its best. There are iron impurities in the clay which push out in dark rust-coloured spots, but the eye is drawn into the light blue centre characteristic of oak ash glazes.

Hiraoka san's work has a sculptural roughness to it and is often combined with a crackle glaze for maximum effect - or with one of the vibrant blue wood ash glazes which is becoming a signature of his.

Hiraoka san is great company, chatting about football, cars or dogs, and his cheerful demeanour comes through in his hand-made ceramics.
