Takatori Warabai / Ameyu Soushu Sake Cup

These are lovely sake cups - the rivulets and ripples of the yellow ameyu glaze dribble down the cup over the subtle and varied blue-grey warabai glaze. You can feel the ripples in the glaze as you pick the cup up and admire the depth of colour through the clear sake.

Care Guide

Like all tableware and handmade homewares, our products should be used with some degree of care to help keep them looking good. These are fired at a high temperature but the local Koishiwara clay has quite a low stone content, so they are not quite stoneware, but they are suitable for everyday life being dishwasher and microwave safe. By virtue of their fine making, Takatori products are more delicate and we recommend handwashing to reduce the chance of breakage. However, you may feel that dishwashing is safer than washing by hand!

These are all food safe and conform to BS6748:1986 + A1:2011 (Toxic Metal Release)

Takatori Kiln

The tea master Kobori Enshū valued Takatori ceramics for their subtle glazes and refined construction, and coined the phrase kireisabi to describe the appearance of patina which the Takatori family could achieve. 400 years later, the Takatori family is still going strong and their expertise is still apparent as soon as you see or hold any of their work. Despite all the tradition, the Takatori family are very open to experimenting and trying new glaze combinations and shapes and this has been a really fun process for both of us.


Their pieces seem so delicate, but the Takatori family fire their kiln at 1250 degrees which means all their mugs for example can be put in the dishwasher or microwave and are surprisingly resilient and can be used as everyday items. A lovely combination of beauty, utility, tradition and experimentation.
